The U.S.
Government hosted an Iftar gathering in coordination with Promoting
Youth Civic Engagement Project (PYCE) to discuss the project’s
achievements and recognize the accomplishments of the project’s youth
leaders. The Iftar was sponsored by the United States Agency for
International Development (USAID), in coordination with the Ministry of
Youth and Sports, and brought together officials from the Ministry of
Youth and Sports, the Ministry of Endowments and Guidance and the
Ministry of Education, as well as participants in PYCE.
The
Iftar gathering is a part of a larger series of events, in which PYCE
seeks to increase the ability of youth clubs and schools to conduct and
sustain the educational, volunteer and recreational opportunities that
help youth civic engagement in their communities thrive. According to
USAID Mission Director Herbert Smith, “Civic engagement is key to
improving Yemen’s future. Through community service, youth can make a
difference in their own individual communities, which will eventually
affect all of Yemen.”
Promoting Youth Civic Engagement is a two-year project and was extended until December 2013. The project is funded by USAID, administered by AMIDEAST, and seeks to engage youth in their communities through community service, sports, and recreational, cultural and educational activities in the governorates of Aden, Sana’a, Lahj and Mareb
